History

The congregation to later become Arundel Baptist Church met for the first service on the last Sunday of July, 1978, in the auditorium of Millersville Elementary School.  The group known then as "Millersville Baptist Church" met in the school until July, 1980, when they moved to the present location in Gambrills, MD.  The name change to Arundel Baptist Church fit the proximity to Arundel High School.

As the church outgrew the building built in the early 1920s plans were developed to preserve the historic appearance of the building while adding to the size accommodating the worship and education needs of the growing congregation.

From the beginning the focus of the church included reaching people in this area and, through missions, around the world with the Gospel of Jesus Christ,  encouraging continued growth in those reached, and seeking ways to minister to the community around us.  From the beginning children's ministries of AWANA, summer camps, and Vacation Bible School as well as Sunday School and children's worship were important tools in reaching and teaching families.  Similarly, ministries of encouragement for women, men and couples have been important in the growth of this church.

Arundel Baptist Church is associated with the American Baptist Association on a national level and locally with the  Mid Atlantic Baptist Association.  In the beginning the first and founding pastor, Robert Myers, was an Interstate Missionary supported by the churches of the American Baptist Association.  As Arundel grew into a self-supporting church it continued to support missions in cooperation with the churches of the ABA and MABA.

In July of 2009, after 52 years in the ministry and 31 years at Arundel Baptist church, Pastor Myers preached his last sermon as pastor.  Pastor Myers hasn’t retired though and is still serving in various roles at our church and is the care group leader for our seniors ministry.  He also serves the churches of the ABA in various capacities.

Today Arundel Baptist continues to maintain a strong passion for reaching our community with the gospel of Jesus Christ and helping people to become passionate about loving and serving God.  Since August 1, 2009 Greg Thompson has served as lead pastor and our church is building on the great foundation that was laid throughout our history.

Our mission statement today is, “Loving God and Loving People” and is taken from what Jesus referred to as, “the two greatest commands” in Matthew 22:36-40.  We are striving to increase our love for God as we develop stronger relationships with Him each day.  We believe that as we grow in our understanding of God it naturally develops our love for Him and in turn a love for people flows from us as we walk in the Spirit.

We desire to develop men, women and children into faithful followers of Jesus.  We do this by loving God and making Him the center of our lives and church.  We also have a strong desire to help strengthen families and individuals through discipleship.  We believe that it is the job of every Christian to make disciples as Jesus commanded in Matthew 28:18-20.  This is our heart and passion today.  Come join us as we make history!
